Gamma acquires Accel-backed design startup Lica

Gamma acquired Accel‑backed design startup Lica to form an internal design research lab, with Lica’s founders Priyaa Kalyanaraman and Purvanshi Mehta leading the effort. Lica began in 2023 as a tool that turns screenshots and recordings into presentations and short videos, later raising $4 million in 2024 from Accel, South Park Commons and Village Global.

The acquisition aligns with a shared vision of simplifying visual communication. Gamma, which already serves over 100 million users with its presentation platform, will add image generation and explore new formats such as interactive visuals. Lica’s team will focus on adapting AI‑generated presentation and communication styles to specific audiences, aiming to let users produce tailored outputs that need little post‑editing.

  • Lica founded 2023; $4 M raised 2024 (Accel, South Park Commons, Village Global)
  • Founders Kalyanaraman and Mehta to lead Gamma’s design research lab
  • Gamma targets 100M+ users; will add image generation and format exploration
  • No public details on model architecture, context window, or license

Why this matters

The acquisition shows Gamma’s intent to strengthen its AI‑driven visual stack by adding Lica’s design‑focused generative expertise. However, without disclosed model architecture, context window size, or licensing terms, it is impossible to assess potential performance gains or how the combined system will compare to existing benchmarks.
