Meta’s new Glimmer AI model offers a hint at Zuckerberg’s personal intelligence vision

Meta has released Muse Glimmer, an open-weight model designed to power AI agents locally on consumer hardware. This 30-billion parameter model is an open version of Meta's closed model, Muse Spark, and is available under the permissive Apache 2.0 license. The key features of Glimmer include:

  • Support for text and images
  • Training across over 100 languages
  • Ability to perform multi-step tasks locally on a Mac or PC with a single consumer GPU

Glimmer is designed to operate "anywhere, anytime, with or without an internet connection", enabling a more privacy-sensitive personal agent. This aligns with Mark Zuckerberg's vision of distributing superintelligence widely, with the goal of empowering individuals and providing them with capable personal agents that can improve their lives.

The release of Glimmer highlights Meta's distinction between models that will be released openly and those that will remain closed. While Glimmer can be downloaded and fine-tuned, Muse Spark remains closed-weight, indicating that Meta is carefully considering which models to release openly due to safety concerns.
