OpenAI Merges Codex into ChatGPT, Debuts GPT-5.6 Sol with Ultra Mode

OpenAI has announced that Codex and ChatGPT are coming together into a single app, bringing dedicated workspaces for developers next to a new work agent. Along with this integration, OpenAI rolled out its latest frontier model, GPT-5.6 Sol. Sol includes a new 'Ultra mode' that gives the model a larger reasoning budget for complex goals, alongside automatic parallel task delegation across subagents.

The update introduces several developer-centric capabilities:

  • Computer & Browser Use: Sol can control the macOS Simulator using 'appshots' (context-aware screenshots) to navigate screens in the background, and supports Passkey authentication in browser sessions.
  • Inline Editing & Diffs: In-app browser views support direct visual annotations, diff inspects, and precise inline code edits.
  • Sites: Developers can publish full-stack applications built with Codex directly to 'Sites,' which includes built-in hosting, database persistence, and file storage.
  • Mobile Upgrades: ChatGPT on mobile now supports task orchestration, branch diff comparisons, and SSH connections to remote dev boxes.
