Claude Instant 1.2

Model Overview

Claude Instant 1.2 was a latency-optimized, cost-effective large language model (LLM) developed by Anthropic, released on August 9, 2023. Serving as a faster, cheaper alternative to the heavier Claude 2 model, it established the lineage that would eventually become the "Haiku" class of Anthropic's models. With a context window of 100K tokens, it offered strong text processing capabilities before being deprecated in favor of the newer Claude 3.5 Haiku and other models.

Capabilities

At the time of its release, Claude Instant 1.2 offered significant improvements over its predecessor, Claude Instant 1.1. Key capabilities included:

  • Enhanced Reasoning & Coding: Improved mathematical reasoning and programming task capabilities.
  • Better Response Quality: Generated longer, more structured responses and followed formatting instructions effectively.
  • Multilingual & Extraction: Improved multilingual comprehension and precise quote extraction from large documents.
  • Safety: Enhanced resistance to jailbreaking and reduced rates of hallucination, backed by Anthropic's safety research.

Example Use Cases

Due to its low-latency profile, Claude Instant 1.2 was commonly used for:

  • Casual Dialogue and Conversational AI: Powering fast-response chatbots.
  • Text Analysis and Summarization: Quickly summarizing long texts or extracting key information.
  • Document Comprehension: Processing long documents using its 100K context window.
  • Lightweight Coding Tasks: Assisting with simpler programming queries and debugging.

Performance & Benchmarks

Anthropic reported noticeable performance gains for Claude Instant 1.2 compared to earlier versions:

  • Codex (Coding Benchmark): Achieved a score of 58.7%, up from 52.8% in Claude Instant 1.1.
  • GSM8K (Math Benchmark): Improved to 86.7%, up from 80.9%. It provided a highly efficient price-to-performance ratio for tasks that did not require the heavy reasoning capabilities of Claude 2.

Intended Use & Limitations

Intended Use: Designed as a faster, lower-priced alternative to flagship models, specifically targeting applications requiring low latency and high throughput. Limitations: Claude Instant 1.2 is currently deprecated. Anthropic has retired the endpoint for this model. Users and developers are recommended to migrate to Claude 3.5 Haiku or newer models, which provide superior reasoning, tool-use capabilities, and a better price-to-performance ratio.
