ChatGPT can now send texts for you with new Apple Messages plugin

OpenAI has released an Apple Messages plugin for ChatGPT that links a user's iMessage inbox directly to the chatbot. The extension works alongside Codex and the ChatGPT Work environment, allowing the same interface to be used for personal and professional messaging tasks.

Through the plugin users can ask ChatGPT to sort, analyze, or edit existing conversations, draft new messages, send them on their behalf, delete specific threads, or search for information buried in historic chats. A short promotional clip shows the model suggesting follow‑up replies based on the previous day's inbox.

OpenAI states that the plugin executes locally on the user's machine and does not build an index of all messages, though the exact meaning of that claim remains unspecified. The company advises users to monitor ChatGPT's actions and warns that enabling persistent approval removes the final opportunity to review a message before it is sent.

  • Runs locally on the user's device
  • No server‑side message index created (per OpenAI)
  • Compatible with Codex and ChatGPT Work
  • Supports sorting, analysis, drafting, sending, deletion, and search of iMessage data
  • Persistent approval disables pre‑send review

Why this matters

Fact: The plugin operates locally and does not create a server‑side index of messages, which limits the amount of data that could be retained or exposed by OpenAI’s infrastructure. Inference: While this reduces centralized privacy risks, it shifts trust to the local execution environment and the model’s behavior; any device‑level vulnerability or unintended model action could still compromise message confidentiality, underscoring the need for careful oversight and clear user controls.
